I've realised the answer to my own question, above. The '||' is Bash 'or', which means execute the following command only if the preceding one failed. The ':' is then a synonym for 'true', i.e. a command that always returns 0, indicating success.

So the purpose of appending '|| :' to every command is to mask the failure return value. All commands will always succeed, even if tests fail or pylint finds errors, etc.

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so
I guess I'll just sum it up what I wrote and say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I'm still new to everything. Do you have any points for inexperienced blog writers? I'd certainly appreciate it.

is there a method of working out what version of selenium library you are using via the command line? I have an issue where some of the Keywords are not recognised and are making my tests fail. thanks

Is there any problem with just using .bashrc to restrict commands?

BASH holds the ssh command line options in $BASH_EXECUTION_STRING
So I just do:
.echo .$BASH_EXECUTION_STRING. | grep -q -e "^.myallowedcommand1" -e "^..." || exit 1

Hello just stumbled upon your blog via Yahoo after I typed in, "How to use RobotFramework (part 2)" or

and I will of course credit you as the source. Thanks for your time.
